A Tonsillectomy!
After 4.5 very long years of... not sleeping well Michael had his tonsils removed! We've tried... a lot of things, and nothing has worked. Finally, the pediatrician recommended we go see an ENT about Michael's tonsils and possible obstructive sleep apnea. To be honest I don't think that contributes to his unwilliness to go to sleep but I think it could contribute to the multiple times he wakes up the night. So we scheduled the surgery... then it was postponed because of a water main break... and I almost cried and the schedulers felt bad and let us move it to the next day.
We arrived early in the morning (6am). Michael was thrilled to be allowed to get up that early, because he hates to sleep and this meant less sleeping. So we arrived, checked in and waited. Michael was annoyed. I think he thought we would arrive, immediately go into surgery, and then immediately go home... that's not how it works. It turned out that the surgery center was a happening place... we had a long wait. There were plenty of shows on, but he was still annoyed- they had they Disney Channel. See 25 years ago I would have been thrilled about the Disney Channel (heavens has it been that long?) but as he has grown up in the days of Netflix he finds regular tv boring. I will also say that we don't have regular tv so his entire life has been Netflix. He was so confused why we couldn't pick our own show and why there were commercials. Oh yeah and they only watch shows that happen to air on PBS Kids (they don't know what channels are so this is pretty meaningless to them), but let's just say some of the shows are little different than what was on. He said "Mom, we aren't learning"... yes friend it's true. So we sat through the annoyance and were finally called to pre op (it was really only about an hour). So at 7am we headed back.
See not thrilled by the shows. He liked pre-op, the anesthesiologist were thrilled by him, he told them all what what happening to him and they thought it was hilarious. No really they brought multiple doctors over to hear the four year describe his procedure. And then they wheeled him back. And 30 minutes later he was done, another 20 minutes later he was in recovery. No really it was that fast, farewell tonsils and adenoids.
He did NOT enjoy the surgery center. He may have flipped out, screamed, refused to eat a popsicle, and tried to rip his own IV out. Brian says this is similar to the way I acted after getting my wisdom teeth out- I refuse to believe I was that irrational, but let's be honest it's probably true. So apparently he gets that from me, great. So he wasnt thrilled. He kept asking for more medicine, when he heard that he could have more medicine when we got home he was even more anxious to leave. We had to wait two hours... it was a LONG two hours.
He was tired, but still Michael, so he didn't ever actually go to sleep. He was angry that the internet didn't work super well so Netflix wasn't an option. He didn't like the popsicles because they were cold, he wanted to go home... yes it was dramatic.
He had to eat at least one popsicle to leave. He hated the pulse ox on his finger... sorta like Zachary. I think this was the most dramatic part of the surgery... not the surgery itself but keeping this on his finger.
